Snowboard

DIY episode 11 - Kuril islands, part 1

5 grown men, 5 weeks, 1500km a volcanic archipelago and Maewan the 30ft tin boat they called home – of course Xavier De Le Rue was in for the adventure.

Erwan is travelling the world by boat and asked Xavier (not celebrated for his sea legs – see Mission Antarctic for copious amounts of puke) if he would like to join from Petropavlovsk to Hokkaido through the Kuril archipelago renown for it’s severe climate and seismic activity, stopping en route to snowboard the volcanoes that make up part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire”.

Xavier arrived April 22nd, with plans to set sail almost immediately, but Russian democracy does not work like that, and a mere two weeks later they managed to head south for Severo.
The first foreigners into port meant the team were a local attraction treated to showers, vodka, and unique guitar playing from the local fishermen but being a first also requires more paperwork!
Three weeks into the trip Maewan, stripped back to the bare minimum in order to fill every crack and crevasse with gear, set sail for Atlasov island and Alaid volcano, the highest and “most beautiful” peak of the 100 volcanoes in the Kuril archipelago.
