Federica's biggest dream

The whole season has been a constant fight for Federica, there were no place for mistakes knowing Mikaela Shiffrin and Petra Vlhova were here to reach the same goal, grab the Overall Crystal Globe. She showed up at almost every races of the season, technical and speed ones. She started the season with a victory in Solden, and it gave the trend for the rest of the winter. We always knew she was an incredible skier with strong qualities, but this season we discovered a great champion.

"It was my BIGGEST DREAM."

Federica Brignone

Federica Brignone, not 30 years old (well, in few months), she was born in Milano from parents, both involved into the ski from the beginning. Indeed, she is the daughter of the 80’s Alpine skiing champion Maria Rosa Quario. She did her first steps on skis at 1 and half, and then in the Courmayeur Ski Club at 6 yo, when the whole family moved to Aosta.

“The love for skiing was already there. Then I just kept skiing and have fun with friends in the ski club until the regional team in 2005.”

Anecdote: she put on Rossignol Skis for the first time in 1992 when she was 2 yo, skiing on the carpet in Milano. The love story has already started.

Federica Brignone is the first Italian woman to win the Overall Crystal Globe. The first accomplishment, already a great one, but during the 19/20 season she is also the Giant Slalom and Alpine Combined Crystal Globe winner. Then, she is going back home with three now Globes, for sure she will need to mount a new shelf at home, in the “Valle d’Aosta”.

“It was my BIGGEST DREAM, that I was seeing as unreachable, or really really far! For me skiing is being complete: compete in every event, and it is fun and more challenging. So, it was really everything I always wanted to reach! How would you feel if every career dream came true? Then... Yes, I feel like this!”

She is known to be strong on the technical races, especially in Giant Slalom, but she has been training forever to be better at Downhill and Super G, and it finally worked!

“It's a path that started many years ago. I wasn’t injured the last summer as the past 2 seasons, so I could train as all the other athletes. I was really confident with my Super G skis and in DH from January too!”

Back on the anecdote, Rossignol is supporting Federica for a very long time now. The relation between the brand and the alpine skier must be one of the strongest to push the athlete at her top.

“The relation we have is really important, I have my Rossignol technician, Sbarde, who works with me every day on slopes, and then a lot of hours in the skiroom; and he has a direct contact with Rossignol. During the spring after the last races, we test the new material. And then during the summer and fall camps, we work on all the setups we found interesting the spring before.

During winter, I race almost all events I don't really test anymore, just if there is something new coming up. I'm a simple athlete, when I find the right sensations with my skis and boots, I go all the season with it, and normally it is the same for every condition. I have a lot of sensations, I’m quite sensitive, It is mandatory to have a good feeling to push further on every single turn!”

Now back home, as half of the globe, she has to stay inside and wait until the situation calm down. And as for everyone, it is a great occasion to spend time doing new activities.

“As usual, I still train every day in my garage. I have many things and I’m inventing a lot of new combinations to change and not be bored.

I cook, I love to try new recipes and I try to clean and set all the winter stuff and parts of the house that I never have the time to do. And also, a lot of interviews, meditation, time to learn how to play guitar and dance online with my hip-hop coach. I'm not bored for sure!”

If we can remember one very intense moment this season, the Giant Slalom in Sestriere, were Federica is taking the lead, equal time with Petra Vlhova (another member of Rossignol Band Of Heroes) ahead of Mikaela Shiffrin for 0,01s, it is when the GS Globe started to be a potential reality for the Italian.

"For sure I'm a bit sad that the season had to stop earlier. I was skiing really good in Are before the end, and all season long. I'm a fighter and I wanted to do it on slope. But then something bigger was going on!"

Even if there were some troubles during the season, Mikaela Shiffrin decided to pause her season after her dad’s decease - we are sending her all our thoughts – and the last races had to be canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Federica succeed to gain enough points to lead the overall and realize her dream.

Thanks Federica for the emotions and this incredible season. Show must go on.
