The Japanese powder always made all freeriders in the world curious and envious. Last January, we organize a trip in the land of the rising sun with the best pow hunters to make sure that the Japanese blanket of snow is as incredible as in our fantasy. The merry gang was contend with some legendary snowboarders such as the frenchies Xavier De Le Rue and the Freeride World Champion Marion Haerty and the new generation with the American Andrew Muse and the French Enzo Nilo. On the ski side, we came with a tray of quality contend with french freerider Sam Favret and the former freestyler Jacob Wester who’s now roaming the Chamonix’s hill after his X-Games medal

The team spirit was as light as the snow. Men, women, skiers and snowboarders were reunited to share the same passion. Swedish, French, American, everybody agreed on the snow’s softness, so deep and stable at the same time. All of them came to discover or relive the amazing experience that Japanese culture is. As Marion Haerty says well: “We are lucky enough to explore, travel and discover new places all the time – that’s what I love the most! Japan is a total escape and tourists are treated like guests, people are so thoughtful.”

Overloaded, two buses are crossing this huge white cloud which is offering a constant snowfall to arrive at the first stop of the trip, Hakuba – and more precisely Otari Onsen. The first ride spot has been decided: Hakuba 47. With a bottomless deep powder, Jacob – who was expecting long and flat runs for his first trip to Japan - is completely bluffed. A couple of chairlifts, 20 minutes of hike and so many steep and untracked options for our bunch of freeriders. Second spot and second success: Kidjimadarai known for his deep snow and his fast shifts. And they’ll even opened the top chairlift exclusively for our group who will enjoy a long and virgin run in the forest…

When the “multi-cultural arrangement” is “lost in translation”
The culture clash is real, the Japanese staff is reticent and doesn’t understand the irresistible desire to go out of the gates even though it’s forbidden. In front of them, a bunch of unstoppable occidental ready to break the rules facing such a spectacle… The goodwill and the kindness of the hosts shows how rich this culture is rich. The famous Onsen, hot natural bath will become a daily ritual for everybody. In Otari Onsen, the man in charge Seegi is honoured to open the doors of this 250 years old mythic place, a traditional temple with a basic level of comfort but an atmosphere unique. Marion was touched by the “Shinto”, this shamanic religion which defy elements… Kami, a divinity who’s caring of a place, living on the top of the mountain, protecting a forest or stay under a waterfall…
