HANSDOTTER AND MIELZYNSKI, QUEENS OF THE NIGHT!

Riders in this news :  Erin MIELZYNSKI  ; Frida HANSDOTTER

The night slalom in Zagreb is always a special stage. All girls want to become ‘Snow Queen’ of Croatia! 17-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin confirmed that she is the real new star of the Ladies World Cup. The American teenager won both runs to take the victory by 1.19 seconds with a two-run combined time of 2:01.73. Behind her, two Rossi’s racers are on the podium! Sweden’s Frida Hansdotter still realized two strong runs and signs her second podium this season after Are’s slalom. Erin Mielzynski from Canada secured the second World Cup podium of her career since her victory last season in Ofterschwang.

It’s amazing, I wear my emotions on my sleeve and I knew I had to take some steps this year to get on the (podium). It’s great to have this to build my confidence and remind me what it takes. I just want to learn from every experience and I learned a lot from today. I came into today just wanting to simplify things. I think I’ve been trying to find a race gear that I don’t necessarily need to find. In the first run I was fifth and in the second run I tried to keep it simple. The course was really difficult so I just tried to keep it together from top to bottom. It was great seeing the green (leader’s) light at the bottom. I had a bit of a wait after that but it was amazing”, said the 22-year-old Mielzynski.

Incredible downhill in Bormio!

Riders in this news :  Brice ROGER  ; Christof INNERHOFER  ; Didier DEFAGO

Bormio’s downhill was totally crazy this Saturday – like every year – but in 2012 the first four racers are in 0.02 seconds! For the second time since 1978 in downhill, two skiers share the first place: Hannes Reichelt (AUT) and Dominik Paris (ITA). Aksel Lund Svindal (NOR) completes the podium at only 0.01s. Klaus Kroell (AUT) just ends off the podium by 0.02 seconds compare to the leaders. The slope “Stelvio” was a little faster than the trainings and the battle to be on the podium was strong.

Second of the two last trainings, Christof Innerhofer (Rossignol) doesn’t manage to confirm during the race and ends 9th. The Italian, winner in 2008 and 3rd in 2010, was a little disappointed: “I do a big mistake on the flat, it was not the section to do that because I lost a lot of speed. Maybe today I can’t win because the podium was so close. Before this mistake I was skiing well.  But after I didn’t take the line that I wanted and I lost again time in the third last gates. When I show how I was skiing during the trainings I could be happy but of sure I’m a little angry because I think it was possible to win. I hadn’t taken the chance.

After a halftone season’s beginning, Didier Défago (Rossignol) wanted to show best things on this slope where he has win last year. Unfortunately, the Swiss was not perfect to grab the podium: “I did a good start but after I didn’t ski well during two sections and it was too much to be on the top. In the end, I didn’t have the good rhythm. I’m disappointed because I think that I could do better things. Although my season is difficult at the moment, there is some positive stuff to keep. Now, I will prepare myself for Adelboden.

The performance of the day is for the young French Brice Roger (Rossignol) who finishes 16th for his second participation in Bormio. After his 10th place in Val Gardena, the skier of La Plagne continues his learning in World Cup. “I didn’t change my ski between the first training and the race. My start was not quick but after, in the finish section, I didn’t lost time. I’m happy to be on the 16th. At the moment, I’m in confidence. I have better and better bibs. I hope that I will grab the Top 30 quickly. I will continue to work. My next downhill will be in Wengen, I don’t know this slope, I think that it will be very physical!

WORLEY COMPLETES THE YEAR BRILLIANTLY

Riders in this news :  Anémone MARMOTTAN  ; Frida HANSDOTTER  ; Jessica LINDELL VIKARBY  ; Maria PIETILAE-HOLMNER  ; Tessa WORLEY

For the last Giant Slalom of the year 2012, Tessa Worley (Rossignol) grabs the 3rd place in Semmering (Austria) and signs her third podium this season at the same place (after St Moritz and Courchevel). In Austria, at home, Anna Fenninger takes the win with a huge margin (+ 1.10) ahead of Tina Maze (SLO) and in very difficult conditions (fog, wind and snow!). Worley signs the 11th career podium and at the moment, she is 5th of the Giant slalom ranking at only 31 points of the 3rd, Viktoria Rebensburg.

I’ve showed consistency so far this season and this is very important for the self-confidence and encouraging for the future races. The conditions were a bit soft in the 1st run, as I started 2nd,  and were more bumpy in the 2nd. We all had to adapt. Anna did two perfect runs today. I hope I will get my perfect day soon”, said Worley, who won this GS two years ago.

Rossi’s women have still shown very good things with 7 girls in Top 17. Swedish team is very strong this year. Jessica Lindell Vikarby ranks 6th, her best career place in GS. 2007 silver medallist in this discipline, Maria Pietilae-Holmner grabs the 10th place while Frida Hansdotter is 11th. Canadian Marie-Michele Gagnon is 14th, Irene Curtoni 16th and Anémone Marmottan 17th.
