VIDEO : Gagnon 6th in Slalom / Grange 6th in Giant Slalom

Riders in this news :   ; Marie-Michele GAGNON

During the finals of Schladming, Marie-Michèle Gagnon ended 6th of the last slalom of the season. With her 3rd place in Are, she finishes 10th of the ranking of the speciality. In this video, she pays tribute to Nick Zoricic her teammate who passed away last week during the finals of Ski Cross.

This result is very good to end the season. My last slaloms were very strong too. This year is above my expectations, I’m very happy. My third place in Are gives me confidence and also the victory of Erin in Ofterschwang. It gives me good ideas for the next year. I think it will be very great. We decided with all the team to pay tribute to Nick Zoricic and Sarak Burke our teammates. They passed away this year, it’s very sad and we wanted to show that we thought about them.

Jean-Baptiste Grange takes also the 6th place in the giant slalom. This season, he made three Top 10 with a 4th place in Crans-Montana and an 8th place in Bansko. After a difficult season due to his back’s problems, the skier of Valloire hopes that the next winter will be better.

This 6th place is good for me even if I was not very well in the first leg. In the 2nd run, I take advantage to leave in the first bibs. I made four good slaloms these last weeks and I am very close of the top 15. It’s a really good thing for next year. There is still a slalom tomorrow to end correctly the season and after I will have a rest. I must continue to work on my back in order to have fewer pains. It’s the first year I can’t train like I want, it’s complicated but I hang on! I fought for a 20th place in slalom thet me exchange, it’s sure!

VIDEO: Schladming, Super G, 2nd podium for Rolland

Riders in this news :  Leanne SMITH  ; Marion ROLLAND

After his second place during the downhill on Wednesday, Marion Rolland ends third of the Super G during the finals of Schladming. These good results in Austria expect beautiful things for the next year, on the slope where will take place the next World championships.

"It is really incredible! In descent I had big envy for podium but I didn’t think it was possible in Super G. It is really brilliant, I took advantage to have a small number, good conditions and I had a little of luck also that Lindsey Vonn makes a big mistake! I hope in any case that my first podium yesterday was the click"

Leanne Smith (Rossignol) ends fifth and signs the best result of her career.

VIDEO : Schladming, Super G, Victory of Innerhofer

Riders in this news :  Christof INNERHOFER  ; Matteo MARSAGLIA

Winnerhofer is back! The triple medal winner of the last World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Christof Innerhofer, won the last Super G of the season during the finals of Schladming. After a difficult winter and only a third place in Wengen, the Italian racer was very happy of his performance on the slope of the next World Championships in 2013.

Team Rossignol felt good on the Austrian slopes. Matteo Marsaglia ends fourth, the best result of his career in this discipline (4th in Sochi in Super Combined). He could win the race if he didn’t make a mistake four gates before the finish.

It’s very good to finish the season like that but I’m a little disappointed because during the three first inter, I was ahead. I was before Innerhofer who won. I lost time four gates before the finish line. I think the gate was simpler to take but I put the skis across and it was useless. Otherwise I think I could win the race. Our results with Christof Innerhofer are interesting and besides we are in the same team, we have the same Rossi’s skis, the same technician. If the slope is the same next year, it will be good!

Riders in this news :  Marion ROLLAND

During the finals of Schladming and for the last downhill of the season, Marion Rolland (Rossignol) offers herself the first podium of her carrer. “It is crazy, it’s better that we can imagine, it’s fantastic! My season was good and I’m very happy to finish on the podium.”

It’s a second place behind the fabulous Lindsey Vonn, who won the ranking of the speciality, and ahead Tina Maze. “To be behind Lindsey, it’s like a victory because she is very stronger!”, said Marion after the race.

This season, she made good results near the podium: 5th in Sochi, 9th in Saint-Moritz. The skier of les Deux-Alpes marks her territory on the place where will take place the World championships next year: “My two best results of the season are in Sochi and in Schladming so I think it’s a good thing for the future! I want to make better next year!

Please note for the boys, the excellent 4th place of Didier Defago. Injured last winter, he made a nice season including his victory in Bormio in December.

First podium for Marie-Michele Gagnon

Riders in this news :  Marie-Michele GAGNON

A week after Erin Mielzynski's unexpected triumph at Ofterschwang, in Germany,  Quebec’s Marie-Michèle Gagnon reached her main goal this season reaching her first ever World Cup podium in slalom in Are, Sweden where she finished in 3rd place after a thrilling event. ‘Mitch’ Gagnon, was in 5th in Ofterschwang yet she seemed ready to make her move onto the podium in Scandinavia where she fought hard in both runs.

It’s her sixth top-10 finish this season in three disciplines – slalom, giant slalom and Super-combined, which moved-up her in 19th place in the Overall World Cup rankings – and in 10th in the slalom standings. After clocking the 4th best time in the first leg despite a mistake, the Canadian took her chance on the rutty second run attacking hard from top to bottom. This allowed her to beat by 14/100 of a second the leading time of Sweden’s Therese Borssen. Only Germany’s Maria Hoefl-Riesch and first-run-leader Veronika Zuzulova were able to ski faster and moved ahead of her.

Finally, I have been waiting for this for a long time,” said the 22-year-old afterwards. “It has been a goal for the whole season and I’m so happy it’s finally here. Erin’s win last week was a strong inspiration and motivation for me. She really showed us you can do it from anywhere and there’s no pattern you have to get through to win and you can do it any day. I hope now we can soon be on the same podium together.

Interestingly enough, Marie-Michèle was more than confident prior the last women race prior the upcoming Finals at Schladming, in Austria. “I had that feeling, ‘It’s going to be Are, my first podium is going to be in Are,’ I always like the snow here, I always like the place,” she also explained afterwards. I was pretty confident in my slalom having finished so close to the podium last week. It feels like I’m getting closer and closer to winning,” she added.

Mielzynski straddled a gate in the first run but she was still pleased with her way of skiing in the upper part of the run. “I'm feeling even better than I did after the win,” said the 21-year-old, who along with Gagnon has already qualified for World Cup finals in slalom in Schladming as she sits in 15th place after the competition at Are.

I didn't come through the first run today but I know parts of it were fast and it wasn't just a fluky thing the other day, so that feels really good. We are all so happy for Mitch. She deserves a podium and she's worked so hard for this. It was great to see her rejoice in the finish when she knew right away that she would be on the podium.

The World Cup Finals are held from March 14th  - 18th  in Schladming, the site of the 2013 FIS World Championships. Eight races in the four alpine specialties and a Team event are scheduled there from Wednesday to Sunday.
