The American skier is now wearing the red bib of the World Cup leader in that discipline!
With just two weeks remaining until Opening Ceremonies in Vancouver, 2006 combined Olympic gold medallist Ted Ligety celebrated his first season win on Friday with his third consecutive giant slalom victory at Kranjska Gora.
"I kept running after this victory since the beginning of the season. I knew I had to go hard to beat other favorites as Marcel Hirscher or Aksel Lund Svindal who is such a great competitor so I knew I had to go hard. I didn't hold back at all," he said afterwards.
"First run, I skied really well at the top," Ligety said afterwards. "I was pretty psyched I was in second place, only one hundredth back. It's a lot better than being in first place one hundredth ahead,” the skier from Park City, Utah, added.
A strong week end for the American skier who climbed once again the podium the following day with a 3rd place in the second GS scheduled on the Slovenian stage.
It is the fourth podium of the season for Ligety, who won the World Cup giant slalom globe back in 2008. These later performances allowed him to regain the discipline lead!
"It's nice to have this race right before the Olympics. It kind of gives me a little extra confidence boost.”
"It's an awesome giant slalom hill with such incredible terrain, so I really like that part of it. Plus, it's always toward the end of the season, and that's when I feel like I'm skiing the best. It always feels good to race here. I really feel blessed to have a hill like this to compete on."
Yet I feel strong and in a good form for the Olympics. "
After a 6th place in the Super Combined competed on Friday at St Moritz (FRA), the French skier achieved, yesterday, her best performance on the World Cup circuit, taking the 2nd place in the Super G (ex-aequo with A. Fischbacher). The 2009 World vice-champion in that discipline, grabbed thus her first podium of the season!
"I am very happy with this result even more that this podium arrives one month after my fall at Val d' Isere on December. It was rather difficult for me to manage it at the psychological level.”
“This weekend, I felt in confidence after having made a good Super G run the Super-combined on Friday. Today, it was necessary to take all the risks on this very easy course, and I did it! This result is really good for me before the Olympics!”
Men’s FIS World Cup, Wengen (Sui):
Manuel Osborne-Paradis, 2nd in the Downhill, grabs his third podium of the season!
Silvan Zurbriggen takes 3rd place in the Super Combined!
A great week end for the Rossi guys who celebrated the 80th anniversary of the mythical “Lauberhorn” races in Wengen with two podiums from Manny Osborne-Paradis and Silvan Zurbriggen!
On Saturday’s Downhill, Canadian Osborne-Paradis signed a strong performance on one of ski racing’s most demanding course finishing the nearest from the winner Janka.
A great 2nd place for the skier from Whistler who has always skied well there in the past few years with a 3rd place in 2008 and a 5th place last year.
“I like this course just because of the crowd. It’s long but it’s frightening and you can attack everywhere.” "I was having a lot of doubts this week. I have no idea how I was fast today.”
"We've had flat light all week. I tried really hard in the combined downhill and couldn't make the top 30. So today’s result is a real satisfaction!”
In the Super Combined held on Friday, Swiss Silvan Zurbriggen clinched his season’s second podium! After a 2nd place in Alta Badia’s Slalom last December, Silvan climbed once again the podium, finishing 3rd!
13th in the Downhill run in the morning, he clocked the 2nd fastest time in the Slalom!
“I am so happy with this result. I showed that I can ski well. I took benefit from the advices of my teammates. My coaches make a great job and my material is at the top!”
“This podium is very good for my moral and for my fans!”
French Marion Rolland achieved her World Cup best results ever this week-end, taking 5th and 4th places of the two Downhill events scheduled on Friday and Saturday in Haus im Ennstal (Ger).
A great ascent on the World Cup tour for the 27 year-old skier from les Deux-Alpes who knows now that she has the abilities to fight for a podium in the competitions to come…
“Miss the podium for 19 hundredths is hard but I am very happy for Ingrid Jacquemod (3rd). I know that I still need to improve more but I am on the good way…”
