A splendid 2 and 3 podium on the "Stelvio"! An exceptional season for Silvan Zurbriggen, 2nd in Bormio's Downhill, ahead of Christof Innerhofer, 3rd!
Riders in this news :
Last Wednesday, the team Rossignol made a strong impression on
the mythical “Stelvio” with a 2nd place from Silvan Zurbriggen and
3rd place for Christof Innerhofer!
Ten days after his superb exploit in Val Gardena’s Downhill,
Silvan Zurbriggen again managed to make good match with the best
specialists in the speed events at Bormio where he finished close
to the big favorite, the former world champion Michael Walchhofer,
who preceded him only by 8/100 of second!
An exceptional result for the Swiss skier who is currently the
only athlete of the circuit being able to claim with the victory as
well in Slalom as in Downhill.
Whereas he hesitated to come over this mythical stage to take
a little rest before the important period of January and February,
Silvan did not regret to have taken the start of this challenging
Thanks to this new podium, the Rossignol and Lange athlete
could benefit from few days at the head of the Overall World Cup
standing (with 1 point in advance!).
“I am happy to have take the decision to come here, I
really did not expect to finish again on the podium today,
especially not after the two rather disappointing
“To finish 2nd on this extremely selective downhill with
some hundredths only from Michael Walchhofer, who has so much of
experiment here, is a great performance which I really appreciate.
More than that I take again the lead in the Overall standing. It is
great for sure but that does not have any range in this beginning
of the season. It remains so many races in the months to come,
especially in January. My program will be rather intense in January
and therefore I prefer to give up the parallel slalom of Munich of
next January 2. I prefer to train in slalom and try to find my
marks in this speciality. ”
Surprising 5th here in Bormio in December 2004 whereas he was
especially regarded as a specialist in slalom, Silvan then returned
only twice on this terrible `Stelvio', finishing in particular 17th
and 43th in 2006. It is only at the last time that Silvan decided
to come here this winter to defend his red bib of the leader of the
speciality after his spectacular and astonishing success of Val
Gardena which he now completely confirms.
“I am not really able to explain the reason of my success
of today because I didn’t have great illusions after the last
trainings, I think that I owe my progression with an excellent
mental preparation. I reflected really much yesterday evening and
passed by again all the details of the course in my head. This
morning, I really felt decided, ready to give it all. I think that
I was very motivated by approaching the race. The tension really
stimulates me. I could well attack today especially in the final
part where I really could let the skis go like rockets.
After a short active rest devoted to relax and a few days of
training in slalom, Silvan will go to Zagreb to try to also shine
in slalom. “For the moment I want especially to concentrate on
the next stage, we will see thereafter if I must skip over some
stages in order to recover and find back all my energy.”“It is
necessary to benefit thoroughly from this form as long as it is
there, I do not want in any case to put pressure on me with the
general World Cup classification. The Finales at Lenzerheide are
still far, and I still have many important appointments in my
Italian Christof Innerhofer, big favorite on this “Stelvio”’s
stage and winner here in 2008, takes down his first podium of the
season by finishing 3rd place in that competition. It is the 4th
World Cup podium for the young Italian who is back at his best
level after health problems last season. A promising year 2011 for
this talented Rossignol athlete!
